Tips for Taking Care of your Forklift Battery

Your electric forklift is an integral part of your warehousing operations.  To ensure smooth and consistent warehousing activities, you need to take care of your industrial forklift without fail. Even a short-duration breakdown of a lift truck battery can impact your productivity.  1) High Temperatures can Impact Forklift Battery
Often when forklifts are operated in an extreme environment, the optimal battery life is adversely affected. The heat caused by forklift operation causes the lead within the industrial battery to deteriorate. If you use the battery forklift consistently for long or in high temperatures make sure you allow the battery to sit long enough to cool down before using it again in the forklift. Also, provide proper ventilation to the charging battery by simply opening the hood while its getting charged. If you want longevity for your forklift, pay attention to these minute details and you will witness positive results.
2) Checking and Maintaining Battery Fluid Levels
Watering is essential for powering your forklift.  The right amount of water in your battery is critical for the optimum functioning of the forklift. You can schedule a check for monitoring the fluid level of your forklift batteries.
Lead-acid batteries in forklifts use a mixture of 35% lead-acid and 65% water within its cells. So, during discharge, the water evaporates, leaving behind lead-acid. This creates a disproportionate level of water and acid. So, you need to replace that water in order to maintain the right balance.
However, it is also important to note here that the battery should be watered only when the battery is fully charged to avoid any detrimental effects.
3) Avoid Overcharging and Undercharging
When your forklift’s battery hits the red zone with a 20% charge remaining, it is recommended that you discontinue using the battery and put it on charge right away. Continuing to use a low-charged battery negatively impacts its lifespan. Also, make sure to charge your battery full and avoid overcharging and undercharging. While undercharging can lead to plate sulphation and battery breakdown, overcharging can cause the electrical components to overheat and damage your lift truck.
Besides the above-mentioned precautions, there are some other guidelines which when followed correctly can help you enjoy your forklift services without unwanted complications. These include the following:
Keep the battery clean, dry and free from corrosion.
Get your battery checked at regular intervals from your service provider for any defects or malfunctions.
Keep electrolyte levels above separator protectors.
Keep vent caps tightly in place.
Cool before charging or operating if the battery is above 115 degrees Fahrenheit
Use approved chargers of correct voltage and current output.
Keep the truck compartment and battery cover open during charging.
